How to Decorate a Living Room with High Ceilings

High ceilings in a home can feel like both a blessing and a curse. For the most part, home buyers love high ceilings, and they’re often a highly sought-after feature. Yet, decorating a home with high ceilings comes with its challenges. Sometimes your furniture dwarfs in comparison to the size of your room, or you can never quite achieve the cozy feeling you love in a living space.

In this blog, I’ll discuss my best tips for decorating a living room with high ceilings. Let’s get started.

How Do You Cozy a Room with High Ceilings?

Do you feel that you’re missing the cozy and inviting feeling from your living room with high ceilings? You’re not alone! That’s one of the most common problems that people have, and fortunately, there are a few tried and true tricks to help you remedy this.

Paint the ceiling

Your ceiling is a blank canvas, and you should use it to your advantage! While you don’t have to go all Michelangelo on the space, you can add a subtle wow factor, that makes your guests want to admire the beauty of your high ceilings. I suggest a paint color that is a few shades lighter or darker than your walls for a subtle effect. If you want something more dramatic, a bold color is also a possibility!

Use curtains to bring warmth

Curtains are a great tool to use if you feel like your high ceilings are taking over your room. Not only does it add some texture to the windows, but it also draws your eye lower to make your space feel tighter and more intimate.

Accent with tall plants

Plants are a warm and inviting way to decorate a space. In a room with high ceilings, look for tall, potted plants that fill up some of your empty air space. It’s a simple way to bring life into the room.

Create intimate conversation areas

Too often, people place furniture in their living rooms too far apart, and this amplifies how cavernous the room feels. Instead, I encourage you to create a few small conversation and activity areas. These areas will create a natural flow of traffic between them and allow you to cozy up in your living room even with its high ceilings.

How Do You Disguise a High Ceiling?

If you have high ceilings but don’t love them, there are a few tips you can use to disguise them.

1.    Hang your artwork up high. You could do this using a gallery-style wall, several small pieces of artwork, or a single large piece of art. Either way, a decorated wall will help draw the eyes up.

2.    Take your window treatments to the ceiling. Not everyone loves this trick, but it works for others. I recommend hanging your draperies at ceiling height to avoid creating a division in your wall and isolating the upper area.

3.    Use shelving creatively. If you have a lot of empty wall space, then tall bookcases or floating shelves can be a beautiful way to use your space.

How to Decorate a Small Living Room with High Ceilings

Optimizing space in your living room is vital. If you have a smaller space with high ceilings, it can feel like a bit of a conundrum. Here are our tips to maximize your space.

·      Furnish to scale: You may hear advice about bringing in larger or heavier furniture in rooms with high ceilings. This can often help reduce the echo that comes with a high ceiling. However, as it would minimize your living space on the ground, I wouldn’t recommend this for your small living room.

·      Create an accent wall: You probably won’t have a ton of room for shelves or accessories because of a tight space. Because of this, you should consider creating an accent wall as a way to break up the visual space in your living room. This wall can be created with wallpaper, paint, wood cladding, etc. For more help on this, read our blog on 2022 Design Trends for Living Room Wallpaper.

·      Maximize your use of art: Art is a great way to make use of high ceilings, and as noted above, you can hang your artwork up high. Just make sure that your select art doesn’t overpower any of the furniture you have.
